A Look Back at Brooklyn's History
Brooklyn started because of a railroad. The Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was being built nearby. At first, the community was called Bullis. This name came from one of the engineers working on the railroad. Later, it got its current name, Brooklyn. This name honors one of the first families who settled there.
Early settlers included John and Sam Perkins. They owned a store and a ferry on Black Creek. Long ago, people used Black Creek to move logs. They would float logs from the local pine forests. These logs went all the way to Pascagoula, a big trading town.
