What Makes Brown's Lake Bog Unique?

This preserve is special because it has several cool features left over from the Ice Age.

Kettle Peatland

A "kettle peatland" is a type of wetland. It forms in a bowl-shaped hole left behind by melting glaciers. Over thousands of years, dead plants build up in these holes. This creates a thick, spongy layer called peat. Brown's Lake Bog is a great example of this rare type of land.

Kettle Lake

Inside the bog, you will find a "kettle lake." This lake also formed in a depression left by a melting block of ice from a glacier. These lakes are often deep and have unique water conditions.

Kames

The preserve also has a "kame." A kame is a small hill or mound. It is made of sand and gravel. Kames are also formed when glaciers melt. They show us how the landscape was shaped long ago.

Sphagnum Moss Mat

One of the most interesting parts of Brown's Lake Bog is its floating "sphagnum moss mat." This is a thick layer of special moss that grows on the surface of the water. It feels like a giant, bouncy sponge! This moss helps create the unique conditions found in a bog.

Exploring the Preserve

Brown's Lake Bog Preserve is a great place to learn about nature. It protects a rare ecosystem. An ecosystem is a community of living things and their environment. You can see unique plants and possibly some animals that thrive in this special habitat. Remember to stay on marked paths to protect the delicate environment.
