Browns Valley has a history that goes back a long time. It was first officially planned and marked out on a map in 1836. Back then, it was called Brownsville. A person named Matthias VanCleave was the one who laid out the plans for the community.
The name "Browns Valley" comes from its location within Brown Township. This is a common way for places to get their names. For many years, people in Browns Valley could send and receive mail right in their own community. A post office opened there in 1850. It served the community for a long time, helping people connect with others, until it closed its doors in 1945.
