Bruce Farrington Coville (born May 16, 1950) is a popular author. He writes many books for young adults. Coville's first book came out in 1977. Since then, he has written over 100 books.
About Bruce Coville
Bruce Coville was born in Syracuse, New York, on May 16, 1950. He still lives there today. His father was adopted by his aunt. That is how the family got the last name Coville.
Before he became a famous author, Coville worked many different jobs. He was a toymaker and even a gravedigger. He also sold cookware and worked on an assembly line. Later, he became an elementary school teacher. He taught both second and fourth graders.
Coville married Katherine Dietz when he was nineteen. They have three children together. Their son Orion was born in 1970. Their daughter Cara was born in 1975. Their youngest son, Adam, was born in 1981.
His Books and Writing
Bruce Coville loved reading books as a child. He enjoyed stories like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. He also read many comic books. He especially liked books that made him laugh or feel a little scared.
These feelings inspired him to become a writer. By his mid-teens, he knew he wanted to write. He started writing and never stopped. His very first book was a picture book called The Foolish Giant. His wife, Katherine Coville, drew the pictures for it. It was published in 1977.
Coville does not have just one way to write his books. Sometimes he plans everything out with a detailed outline. Other times, he just starts writing without a plan. As of 2015, he often uses an "ever-expanding outline." This means he plans the beginning and end of a story. Then he fills in the middle parts as he writes.
Bruce Coville has written over 100 books for young adults. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Even with so many books, he says it gets harder to write each new one. He wants to keep his stories high quality and avoid repeating himself.
Coville also helped start a company called Full Cast Audio. This company makes audiobooks for young adult books. They record the books with a full cast of actors. This makes the stories come alive for listeners.
