Bruce Hyde (born September 14, 1941 – died October 13, 2015) was an American teacher and actor. He taught about how people communicate at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
Many people know Bruce Hyde for his acting roles. He played Lieutenant Kevin Riley in the first Star Trek TV show. He appeared in two episodes: "The Naked Time" and "The Conscience of the King."
Bruce Hyde became sick with cancer in 2010. He got better in 2011. But the cancer came back in 2015, and he passed away that same year.
Early Life and Learning
Bruce Hyde grew up in Dallas, Texas. He went to Robert E. Lee Elementary School there.
He studied at different universities. He earned his first degree from Northwestern University in 1963. Later, he got his master's degree from the University of North Texas in 1984. He then earned his PhD from the University of Southern California in 1990.
His Career Journey
After college, Bruce Hyde worked as a professional actor for several years. He performed on Broadway, which is famous for its plays in New York City. He also appeared on many TV shows.
Bruce Hyde was a special guest at Star Trek fan events. He met fans in places like Denver, Colorado, and Columbus, Ohio, in the late 1970s.
He also directed plays for high school students in California. For a short time, he even sang in small music venues in San Francisco.
Later in his life, Bruce Hyde moved to Minnesota. There, he became the artistic director for Theatre L’Homme Dieu. This was a summer theater program at St. Cloud State University. He taught at St. Cloud State University until he retired shortly before he died.
Bruce Hyde was a member of the Actors' Equity Association. This is a group that protects actors' rights. He stopped acting after he was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010. When his cancer returned, he retired from teaching at the university.
