Early Life and Career Beginnings
Bruce Kulick was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in the Queens area of New York City. His older brother, Bob, was a big influence on his music career. Bob was a successful guitarist who played with famous artists like Meat Loaf and the band W.A.S.P..
In 1974, Bruce started his first band, KKB, with his childhood friends. He later toured with popular singers like George McCrae and Andrea True.
Playing with Meat Loaf
In 1977, the singer Meat Loaf released his famous album Bat Out of Hell. Bruce and his brother Bob both joined Meat Loaf's touring band as guitarists. They traveled the world for a year and appeared on popular TV shows like Saturday Night Live.
Blackjack and Michael Bolton
From 1979 to 1980, Kulick was in a band called Blackjack with singer Michael Bolton. Kulick also played guitar on some of Bolton's solo albums. A song they wrote together, "Stay," was later used by rapper Jay-Z in his number one hit song "A Dream."
Joining the Band Kiss
In September 1984, Bruce Kulick joined the famous rock band Kiss as their lead guitarist. He replaced Mark St. John. Kulick and St. John were the only two members of Kiss who never wore the band's famous makeup and costumes on stage.
Kulick was with Kiss for 12 years. During that time, he played on five of their studio albums:
- Asylum (1985)
- Crazy Nights (1987)
- Hot in the Shade (1989)
- Revenge (1992)
- Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions (1997)

In 1996, the original members of Kiss decided to get back together, putting on their makeup and costumes again for a new tour. Because of this, Kulick and drummer Eric Singer left the band. Even after leaving, Kulick still worked with Kiss on some projects. When guitarist Ace Frehley left Kiss again in 2002, the band hired Tommy Thayer instead of asking Kulick to return.
