Brusque is a city located in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It was started in 1860 by 55 German immigrants.
The city was first known as Colônia Itajahy. Later, in 1890, its name was changed to Brusque. This new name honored Francisco Carlos de Araújo Brusque, who was a president of the Santa Catarina province.

Sports in Brusque
Brusque has its own official football (soccer) team called Brusque Futebol Clube. It was started on October 12, 1987.
The city also has a very good women's volleyball team. They play in the top Brazilian league, the Superliga Brasileira de Voleibol.
Interesting Facts About Brusque
- Brusque was a pioneer in creating the voting machine. The very first place to use it was also in Brusque, back in 1988.
- It was the first city in Latin America to have public computers, starting in 1995.
- The first spinning factory in Santa Catarina was located here, opening in 1892. It was called Textile Factory Renaux.
- Brusque was home to the only English colony in Santa Catarina, established in 1867.
- It is the only city in Brazil that uses chlorine dioxide to treat the water its people drink.
People and Culture
Most people living in Brusque are of European descent. About 90% are White, 5% are Pardos (mixed race), and 4% are Black. Smaller groups include Native Americans and Asians.
When the city was first settled, about half of the people were German. Many Italians (30%) and Portuguese (10%) also came to live here.

Most people in Brusque are Catholic, making up about 80% of the population. Other religions include Lutherans (15%) and Evangelicals (4%). About 1% of the people are Jehovah's Witnesses.
