Bryant Nelson's Baseball Journey
Bryant Nelson started his baseball journey when he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1992. He was picked as a pitcher right out of Crossett High School. The Houston Astros later drafted him in 1993 from Texarkana College. This time, he was drafted as a shortstop.
Early Professional Years
Nelson played his first professional season with the Class A (Short Season) Auburn Astros in 1994. He showed great skill, hitting for a .322 batting average. In 1995, he continued to impress, hitting .327 with 3 home runs and 52 RBIs. He also hit 34 doubles that year. He was very good at avoiding strikeouts, only striking out 40 times in 395 chances.
His time with teams linked to MLB ended in 2005. He played for the Toronto Blue Jays' Triple-A team, the Syracuse SkyChiefs.
Playing in Independent Leagues
After his time with MLB-affiliated teams, Nelson played for several independent league teams. In 2008, he played for four different teams. These included the New Jersey Jackals and the Long Island Ducks. He also played for the Sultanes de Monterrey and Piratas de Campeche in the Mexican League.
In 2009, Nelson joined the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League. He had a good season, batting .300 for the team. He then signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers for the 2010 season.
Achieving 1,000 Hits
On June 2, 2016, Bryant Nelson reached a special milestone. He became a member of the Atlantic League 1,000 Hit Club. He got his 1,000th hit in the league off a pitcher named Darin Gorski. This was a big achievement, as only two other players had done it in Atlantic League history. Those players were Jeff Nettles and Ray Navarrete.
Life After Playing Baseball
Bryant Nelson is now a head coach at Bo Porter Academy. He works there alongside Bo Porter, who is a first base coach for the Anaheim Angels.
