Who Was Bryaxis?
Bryaxis was one of the most important sculptors of his era. He lived during a time when art and architecture were highly valued. His work shows the skill and artistry of ancient Greek sculptors.
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
One of Bryaxis's most famous projects was working on the mausoleum of Maussollos. This was a huge and beautiful tomb built in Halicarnassus (which is now in modern-day Turkey).
- The tomb was ordered by Queen Artemisia II of Caria.
- She wanted to honor her brother and husband, Mausolus, after he passed away.
- The Mausoleum was so grand that it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Bryaxis was in charge of creating the sculptures for the north side of this massive tomb. Three other famous sculptors of that time also worked on the Mausoleum:
Each sculptor was responsible for one side of the tomb. The entire Mausoleum was finished about three years after Mausolus died. It was completed one year after Queen Artemisia also passed away.
Other Famous Works
Bryaxis created many other important sculptures during his career.
The Serapis Statue
Some people thought Bryaxis made a giant statue of the god Serapis for a temple in Alexandria, Egypt. However, experts like Michaelis and Athenodoros Cananites later clarified this. They said that the Bryaxis who made the Serapis statue was a different person with the same name. It was not the famous sculptor Bryaxis.
Other Notable Sculptures
Bryaxis also created several other significant works:
- A bronze statue of Seleucus, who was a king of Syria.
- Five very large statues located on the island of Rhodes.
- A statue of the god Apollo at a place called Daphne, near the city of Antioch.
These works show Bryaxis's talent and how important he was in the ancient Greek art world.
