The Story of the Arboretum's Design

The idea for the Bryn Mawr campus's green spaces started a long time ago. Famous designers helped shape what you see today.

Early Plans by Calvert Vaux

The very first ideas for the campus layout came from a talented designer named Calvert Vaux. He lived from 1824 to 1895. Vaux created a design for the campus in 1884. However, not much of his original plan was actually built.

Frederick Law Olmsted's Vision

Later, in 1895, another very famous landscape architect visited the college. This was Frederick Law Olmsted, who is known for designing many important parks, like Central Park in New York City! In 1897, Olmsted worked with his nephew, John C. Olmsted, to create a new plan for the campus. Their design included some of Vaux's earlier ideas. This plan was mostly followed for many years, helping to create the lovely campus you can visit today.
