The Story of Buckelew Mansion
How the House Grew Over Time
The Buckelew Mansion started out very small. When it was first built in 1685, it was just one single room! Over many years, as different families lived there, the house grew bigger and bigger. It slowly became the large, 23-room mansion you see today.
A man named James Buckelew moved into the house in 1829 with his new wife. At that time, the house was only one story tall. As his family grew, James decided to make the house larger. He added a second story to make more space for his family. This also showed how important he was in the community. Later, in the 1870s, a third story was added to the mansion.
Becoming a Historic Landmark
Because of its long history and beautiful architecture, the Buckelew Mansion was recognized as a special place. In 1979, it was officially listed on two important lists of historic buildings. It became part of the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. On these lists, it is known as the Ensley-Mount-Buckalew House.
