The Buckey O'Neill Cabin is a historic building located in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. It was built way back in 1890 by a man named Buckey O'Neill. This cabin is special because it's the oldest building still standing on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Who Was Buckey O'Neill?

William "Buckey" O'Neill was an interesting person who did many things. He was a writer, a sheriff, and even a judge in his home state of Arizona. He also became famous for being part of Theodore Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" group. This group was a volunteer cavalry unit that fought in the Spanish-American War.

Buckey O'Neill played a big role in the early days of the Grand Canyon. He helped set up what would become the Grand Canyon Railway, which brought tourists to the area. He also worked to protect the Grand Canyon, helping it become a national park later on. Sadly, he passed away in 1898 while serving in Cuba.

The Cabin's History

The Buckey O'Neill Cabin was first used as an office for people visiting the Grand Canyon in the 1890s. This early tourist spot eventually grew into the Bright Angel Hotel.

Later, a company called the Fred Harvey Company bought the hotel. The cabin stayed mostly the same as it was when it was built. In 1935, a famous architect named Mary Colter included the cabin in her design for the new Bright Angel Lodge complex. She made sure the cabin fit in with the new buildings.

About the Cabin

The cabin is a small, one-story building made of wood. It sits on a low stone base right on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Its roof is gently sloped and covered with wood shingles.

The cabin is connected to other parts of the Bright Angel Lodge. It's a great example of how old buildings can be updated for new uses while keeping their history. Today, the Buckey O'Neill Cabin is still used as a guest room at the Bright Angel Lodge.

A Historic Landmark

The Buckey O'Neill Cabin is very important historically. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1975. This means it's recognized as a special place worth preserving. It's also part of a larger area called the Grand Canyon Village Historic District, which is a National Historic Landmark.
