History of Buckingham
Buckingham was named after Buckingham County in Virginia. It's interesting to know that there are actually two places called "Buckingham" in this area! The Buckingham you see today is not the same as an older, historical village that used to be about 3 miles south and 3 miles west of the current location. That old village is now abandoned.
The former village of Buckingham was once the main center for people living in the area. This was especially true around the time of the American Civil War (in the mid-1800s). However, things began to change when the railroad was built around 1880. The railroad was built along Wolf Creek, in the valley below the old village.
Because of the railroad, businesses and homes started to appear in the nearby town of Traer. This meant that the old village of Buckingham slowly became less important. Its population declined over time. By 1925, only 75 people lived in the historic Buckingham settlement.
