A Look Back: Buenavista's History

Buenavista started thanks to an early settler named José Jesús Jiménez Yépez. In 1928, he opened a small store. This store was a place where local farmers could sell their coffee. They could also buy basic supplies they needed.

Farmers living nearby began to buy plots of land around the store. They built their homes there, and soon a small community grew. Gerardo Loaiza later donated land to create the town's main park.

The official founding date of Buenavista is considered to be 1933. In that year, a police inspector was sent to the growing settlement. Mr. Jiménez also donated more land for the town to grow, including the spot where the church was built.

In 1936, the settlement became a "corregimiento," which is like a small town or district, within the municipality of Pijao. Later, on December 10, 1966, Buenavista became its own separate municipality. This happened shortly after the Quindío Department was officially formed.
