The Bugge Islands are a small group of islands covered in ice. They are located near the Wordie Ice Shelf off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. These islands are about 4 to 11 nautical miles (7 to 20 kilometers) northwest of Mount Guernsey.

Discovering the Bugge Islands

The Bugge Islands were first seen from the air in 1936. This happened during the British Graham Land Expedition. Explorers took photographs and later made a rough map from these pictures.

In 1947, the islands were observed again. This time, it was by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE). This expedition was led by Finn Ronne.

How the Islands Got Their Name

Finn Ronne named these islands after his niece, Ruth Bugge. Ruth helped the expedition by sending warm woolen clothing from Norway.

The islands also have other names. The Chilean Antarctic Expedition visited them in 1947. They named the islands Isla Aldea, Isla Eleuterio Ramírez, and Isla Latorre. These names honor heroes from the naval battle of Iquique.
