The building at 320 West Oakdale is a tall, 21-story building in Chicago, Illinois. It was designed by an architect named Milton M. Schwartz. This building is a great example of the International Style of architecture.

Building History

This building shows how many apartment buildings were built in Chicago, Illinois during the 1950s and 1960s. Milton M. Schwartz was the architect, builder, and developer for this project. It was his very first big design.

Because he was in charge of everything, Schwartz could design the building exactly how he wanted. He planned it to be fancy apartments for important people in the city. The apartments were special because they had windows facing three or four different directions.

The rooms inside were made to feel like single-story ranch homes. This building was also one of the first in Chicago to have full air conditioning and all-glass walls. Its simple, repeated look makes it a perfect example of the International Style.

In 1955, the building was featured in an article in Architectural Forum magazine. The article talked about new apartment buildings in Chicago. It even said this building was as good as others designed by famous architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. On April 23, 2013, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special historic place.

Building Design

This skyscraper is 21 stories tall and sits on a strong concrete base. It is located in the Lake View area of Chicago. The building was made to have 57 apartments.

From the fourth floor up, there are three apartments on each level. The third floor has four apartments. Every floor has tall glass windows all around. The floor slabs stick out about 3 feet from the outside walls on floors 3 through 21.

However, the ledge over the main entrance is twice as long. This helps protect the entrance from ice. The first two floors of the building are used for the lobby. The apartments on the very top floor, called penthouses, also have sunroofs.
