Bujumbura Mairie Province is one of the eighteen provinces in the country of Burundi. This province is special because it is made up entirely of the city of Bujumbura. Bujumbura used to be the capital city of Burundi.
What is Bujumbura Mairie Province?
A province is like a large region or state within a country. Bujumbura Mairie Province is quite small. It covers an area of 127 square kilometers. In 2019, about 1,092,859 people lived there. This makes it a very busy and crowded area.
How the Province Was Formed
Before the year 2000, the area around Bujumbura was one big province. But in 2000, it was split into two separate provinces. One part became Bujumbura Rural Province, which is the countryside area. The other part became Bujumbura Mairie Province, which is just the city itself. This change helped to manage the city and rural areas better.
How the City is Organized
The city of Bujumbura, which is the whole province, is divided into smaller parts. These smaller parts are called communes. As of 2014, there are three main communes in the city. They are:
- Muha
- Mukaza
- Ntahangwa
Each of these communes is then divided even further into smaller areas called neighborhoods. There are 13 neighborhoods in total across the three communes. This helps with local government and services for the people living there.
