A Taste of History
Bulgogi has a really long history in Korea! People believe it first appeared in a very old Korean kingdom called Goguryeo. Back then, it had a different name, "Maekjeok."
Later, during the Joseon dynasty, which was a long time ago, people started calling it "Neobiani." This name means 'thinly spread,' which makes sense because the meat is sliced very thin. It was a popular dish enjoyed by many.
How Bulgogi is Made and Eaten
Bulgogi is famous for its sweet and savory flavor. The beef is marinated in a mix of soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and other yummy ingredients. This soaking makes the meat super tender and full of flavor.
When it's time to eat, the marinated beef is grilled. Sometimes it's cooked on a special grill in the middle of the table, so you can cook it yourself! People often eat bulgogi wrapped in fresh lettuce leaves with a bit of rice and other side dishes called banchan. It's a delicious and interactive way to enjoy a meal with friends and family.
Different Kinds of Bulgogi
While beef bulgogi is the most common, there are other kinds too!
- Pork Bulgogi: This is called Dwaeji-bulgogi. It's made with pork instead of beef and often has a spicier kick, using chili paste in the marinade.
- Hot Pot Bulgogi: Sometimes, bulgogi is served in a hot pot with broth, vegetables, and noodles. This is known as Ttukbaegi-bulgogi and is perfect for a warm, comforting meal.
- Grilled Patty Bulgogi: There's also a style called Bassak-bulgogi, where the meat is finely minced and shaped into patties before grilling. It's often from the Eonyang region.
