Bulgunnia Station is a very large sheep farm located in north-western South Australia. It covers about 3,200 square kilometers (1,236 square miles) of land. That's bigger than some small countries!

What is Bulgunnia Station?

Bulgunnia Station is located far from big cities. It is about 175 kilometers (109 miles) south-west of Coober Pedy. It is also about 750 kilometers (466 miles) north-west of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.

This huge farm is home to 26,000 merino sheep. Merino sheep are famous for their soft wool. Only seven people work to manage this vast property. Bulgunnia is one of four large farms in the area run by the Jumbuck Pastoral Company.

Climate and Environment

The weather at Bulgunnia is very dry, like a desert. The area gets only about 160 millimeters (6 inches) of rain each year. In winter, the daytime temperatures are around 18°C (64°F). But in summer, temperatures can soar into the 40s°C (over 100°F).

In 2011, Bulgunnia experienced heavy floods. The farm managers, Shane and Cheryl Miller, were cut off for a few days. They had to build a new road just to get food supplies.

The land where Bulgunnia Station is located was officially named 'Mount Eba' in April 2013.

Amazing Birds of Bulgunnia

Bulgunnia is a very special place for birds. BirdLife International has named it an Important Bird Area. This means it's a critical spot for certain bird species.

It is a key home for the chestnut-breasted whiteface. This bird is considered "near-threatened," meaning it could become endangered if not protected. Bulgunnia also supports other unique birds. These include the inland dotterel, Bourke's parrot, chiming wedgebill, cinnamon quail-thrush, pied honeyeater, and thick-billed grasswren. These birds are important because they live in specific types of environments found here.
