The Bull's Head Tavern: A Historic Meeting Place

Its Role in the American Revolution

The Bull's Head Tavern first opened its doors around 1750. It became a busy place during the American Revolutionary War. This war was fought between the American colonies and Great Britain. The tavern was used as a meeting spot for people called Loyalists. Loyalists were colonists who stayed loyal to the British during the war. They would gather here to join the British army.

Later, in November 1783, a very important person visited the tavern. This was George Washington, who was the leader of the American army. He used the Bull's Head Tavern as his temporary headquarters. This means it was his main base for a short time.

A New Owner and a New Location

After the war, the tavern was bought by a local butcher named Henry Astor. He was the head of the well-known Astor family. The Astor family later became very famous and wealthy in New York.

In 1813, the Bull's Head Tavern moved to a new spot. It relocated uptown to Third Avenue and East 23rd Street. The tavern continued to operate there until the 1830s. Much later, from 1996 to 2015, a modern tavern with the same name opened in that area. It even used a similar bull's head logo, just like the original historic tavern.
