Discovering Buntine

Buntine is a quiet place known for its farming. It is part of Western Australia's important Wheatbelt. This area is famous for growing lots of wheat and other crops.

How Buntine Got Its Name

The name Buntine was first used in 1910. It was the name of a hill nearby. In 1913, the name was given to a railway siding. A railway siding is a short track next to a main railway line. This siding was on the railway line between Wongan Hills and Mullewa. District Surveyor J P Camm suggested the name. The town of Buntine was officially created, or gazetted, in 1916. This means it was formally recognized as a town.

Buntine's Farming History

Farming has always been very important to Buntine. In 1932, the Wheat Pool of Western Australia made an announcement. They said Buntine would get two grain elevators. These elevators help store and move grain. Each one would have an engine. They were installed at the railway siding.

A large storage bin for bulk wheat opened in Buntine in December 1949. It was ready just in time for the harvesting season. On the very first day, about 280 long tons (284,480 kilograms) of wheat were brought in. This shows how much wheat was being grown in the area.
