The Burbach Block is a special old building located at 1113–1115 Main Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was built way back in 1882. This building is important because it shows how the area changed from a quiet neighborhood to a busy downtown business center. Because of its history, the Burbach Block was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's a place worth protecting for future generations.

Exploring the Burbach Block

The Burbach Block stands in the southern part of Springfield's main business area. You can find it on the north side of Main Street. It's part of a group of three old business buildings. The other two are the Bangs Block and the McKinney Building. These three buildings are all together on the block between Crossett Lane and Cross Street.

What Does the Burbach Block Look Like?

The Burbach Block is a three-story building made of red brick. It stands next to a small park near Cross Street. The front of the building has five sections, called "bays." On the ground floor, there's a modern shop.

Look closely at the upper floors! You'll see stone strips instead of regular window sills and tops. There's also cool brick patterns above these stone strips. The very top of the building has a brick wall called a parapet. It has square brick posts at the corners.

A Glimpse into History: Who Built the Burbach Block?

The Burbach Block was built in 1882 for a man named Gerard Burbach. He owned a hotel right next door. That hotel was taken down in 1915 to make Cross Street wider.

The Burbach Block might have been used as an extra part of the hotel when it was first built. The hotel itself started in the 1850s and was very popular in the 1890s. Over the years, the Burbach Block has been home to many different businesses. It has been a furniture store, a dry goods shop (selling things like fabric and small household items), and even a restaurant.
