Burdunellus facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Burdunellus (which means "little mule," probably a nickname) was a man who tried to become the Roman emperor without permission in the late 400s AD. We only know a little bit about him from an old record called the Consularia Caesaraugustana.

In the year 496, this record says that Burdunellus "became a tyrant in Hispania" (which is modern-day Spain). This means he tried to take control and claim the power of an emperor.

How Burdunellus Lost Power

Burdunellus's own supporters eventually gave up on him. They handed him over to the real rulers of the time. He was sent to Tolosa, a city in what is now France.

His punishment was very unusual and meant to be humiliating. He was put inside a bronze bull statue and punished in a very harsh way. This was a rare and severe punishment for someone who tried to take over the empire.

Where Burdunellus Ruled

We don't know exactly where Burdunellus tried to rule, but it was probably in the Ebro River valley in Spain. This area was likely centered around the city of Caesaraugusta, which is now Zaragoza.
