Burger Theory was a popular chain of hamburger restaurants. It started in Adelaide, South Australia. It began as a cool food truck in 2011 and grew to have three stores. Later, in 2019, they had only one store left after changing their recipes. Eventually, the last store became part of The Tavern, a student bar at Flinders University.
The Story of Burger Theory
Burger Theory was started in 2011 by two friends, Dan Mendelson and Rob Dean. They began with a food truck. Many people say they helped bring the idea of food trucks to South Australia.
When they first started, the Adelaide City Council didn't have rules for food trucks yet. This meant the truck couldn't operate on city streets. But later that year, the council created a special program. This allowed Burger Theory to sell food from their truck in certain parts of the city center.
Growing Bigger
In 2012, Dan and Rob opened their first regular restaurant called Pearl's Diner. It was a "brick and mortar" place, meaning it was a real building, not a truck. The next year, they opened a Burger Theory store in Adelaide.
They kept growing! They opened more Burger Theory places at Flinders University and the University of Adelaide. In 2015, they tried to open a store in Melbourne, but it didn't work out.
Big Plans and Changes
Burger Theory still wanted to expand. In 2016, they made a deal with an investor from China. The plan was to open 120 Burger Theory restaurants in China!
In 2017, they made some big changes to their menu. They announced they would no longer sell chicken or bacon. Also, their beef burgers would now be a mix of beef and kangaroo meat.
The Final Chapter
In 2019, Burger Theory closed two of its stores, leaving only one open. The last Burger Theory store was later changed and became part of The Tavern, which is a student bar at Flinders University.
