Burhi Gandak River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Burhi Gandak River is an important river in Bihar, India. It is like a smaller river that flows into a much bigger one, the Ganges. The name "Burhi Gandak" means "Old Gandak" because it flows next to and east of the Gandak River in what used to be an older path.

Where the River Starts and Flows

The Burhi Gandak River begins its journey in a place called Chautarwa Chaur, near Bisambharpur. This area is in the West Champaran district of Bihar.

When it first starts, the river flows through the East Champaran district. After flowing for about 56 kilometres (35 mi) (that's about 35 miles!), the river turns towards the south. At this point, two other rivers, the Dubhara and the Tour, join it, making it bigger.

The Burhi Gandak River travels a total distance of about 320 kilometres (200 mi) (around 199 miles). The area of land that collects water for this river, called its drainage area, is about 10,150 square kilometres (3,920 sq mi) (about 3,920 square miles).

Rivers That Join the Burhi Gandak

Many smaller rivers flow into the Burhi Gandak, adding to its water. These are called its tributaries. The main rivers that join the Burhi Gandak are Masan, Balor, Pandai, Sikta, Tilawe, Tiur, Dhanauti, Kohra, Anjankote, and Danda.
