How Burlingame Terrace Was Developed

Starting the Neighborhood in 1905

Growth After the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake

The neighborhood grew very fast after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Many people moved south from San Francisco to cities on the Peninsula, like Burlingame. They traveled using electric cars and train tracks.

Rules for Early Residents

When Burlingame Terrace was first built, it had special rules. The people selling the homes wanted it to be a quiet, residential area. They said that "undesirable buildings" were not allowed. This meant no stores, bars, or laundries could be built in the neighborhood. Also, every house had to cost at least $1750, which was a good amount of money back then.
