Burton Greene (born June 14, 1937 – died June 28, 2021) was an American free jazz pianist. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. He became well-known for his music in New York City. Burton Greene explored many different types of music. These included avant-garde jazz and Klezmer music.

Burton Greene's Musical Journey
Early Years in New York City
Burton Greene was a key part of the free jazz music scene in New York during the 1960s. He played with many talented musicians. Some of these included Alan Silva and Marion Brown. In 1963, he and Alan Silva started a group called the Free Form Improvisation Ensemble.
In 1964, he joined the Jazz Composers Guild. This was a group formed by Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor. It was a place for jazz musicians to explore new ideas. During this time, Burton Greene recorded two albums. These were released on the ESP-Disk record label.
Moving to Europe and New Sounds
In 1969, Burton Greene moved to Europe. He first lived in Paris, France. Later, he settled in Amsterdam, Netherlands. There, he played music with Dutch musicians. Some of these included Maarten Altena and Willem Breuker.
In the late 1980s, Burton Greene started exploring Klezmer music. This is a traditional style of music from Jewish culture. He formed groups like Klezmokum (with Perry Robinson) and Klez-thetics. Later, he formed a group called Klez-Edge. This group featured singer Marek Balata.
Later Career and Recordings
Klez-Edge released an album in 2008. It was called Ancestors, Mindreles, NaGila Monsters. This album was on John Zorn's Tzadik label. Burton Greene also released a duet album with Perry Robinson. It was called Two Voices in the Desert in 2009.
From the mid-1990s, Greene performed and recorded music in New York. He also played along the East Coast of the United States. He played in duets, trios, quartets, and quintets. He worked with musicians like Mark Dresser and Roy Campbell Jr..
Burton Greene wrote a book about his life. It was called Memoirs of a Musical Pesty-Mystic. He worked on it for over 20 years. The book was published in 2001. Burton Greene passed away on his boat in Amsterdam in 2021.
