Klezmer is a lively type of music. It was created by Jewish people in Eastern Europe. This music mixes sounds from Russian, Greek, and Romanian folk songs. It also uses ideas from Jewish prayer music.
What is Klezmer Music?
In the past, Klezmer was often played at Jewish weddings and religious festivals. It was especially made for dancing. The most common instruments in Klezmer are the clarinet and the violin. These instruments are great for playing the special, often sad, style of Klezmer.
Klezmer music is easy to spot because of its unique sound. It has very expressive melodies. These melodies can sound a lot like a human voice. They can even sound like someone laughing or weeping.
How Klezmer Music Changed
Between 1880 and 1924, many Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants came to the United States from Eastern Europe. When they arrived, their Klezmer music met American jazz. This meeting caused the music to change a lot.
For many years after the 1970s, when Klezmer became popular again, most people knew only the American version of the music. This shows how much the genre grew and changed in the United States.
