Cneoridium dumosum |
The Cneoridium dumosum, often called bushrue, is a special type of plant. It belongs to the citrus family, just like oranges and lemons! This plant is the only species in its group, which is why it's called a "monotypic genus."
You can usually grow new bushrues from seeds. Sometimes, people also grow them from cuttings, which means taking a piece of the plant and helping it grow roots.
Description
The Cneoridium dumosum is an evergreen shrub. This means it stays green all year round. It grows naturally along the coast of southern California and Baja California.
This bush can grow quite tall, sometimes over a meter (about 3 feet). It can also spread out wide. Its branches are covered with small, thin, green leaves.
The bushrue's flowers grow in small groups of one to three. Each flower is about one centimeter (less than half an inch) wide. They have four or five round, white petals. Inside, you'll see eight white stamens with yellow tips.
After the flowers, the plant grows round, reddish-green berries. These berries are about half a centimeter wide. They have a thin skin, much like a citrus fruit, with tiny pits or glands. Each berry usually holds one or two round seeds inside.
