The bust of George Floyd is a sculpture that looks like the head and upper chest of George Floyd (1973–2020). George Floyd was an African-American man who sadly died during an arrest involving a police officer in Minneapolis. This sculpture is located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, New York.
The sculpture stands on a marble base. The part that looks like a person is about 6-foot (1.8 m) tall. It is made from many layers of a special type of wood called okoumé plywood. These layers were cut very precisely using a computer-controlled machine (called CNC). Artist Chris Carnabuci created this artwork. George Floyd's brother, Terrence, helped show it to the public for the first time. This happened as part of the 2021 Juneteenth federal holiday.
The sculpture was planned to move to Union Square in Manhattan in July 2021.
About the Sculpture
This sculpture is a special way to remember George Floyd. It helps people think about his life and the important discussions around fairness and justice. The artist, Chris Carnabuci, used wood to create the bust. This makes it different from many other sculptures often made from stone or metal.
Where it was Displayed
The bust was first placed in Brooklyn. It was a public art piece, meaning it was out in the open for everyone to see. Later, it was moved to Union Square in Manhattan. Union Square is a well-known public park and a place where people often gather.
Vandalism Incidents
Sadly, the sculpture was damaged by vandalism a few days after it was first shown. Someone spray painted a website address, "PATRIOTFRONT.US", onto the base of the sculpture. This happened in June 2021. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) looked into this incident.
The bust was moved to Union Square. Just two days after it arrived there, it was vandalized again.
