What the Sculpture Looks Like
This bronze bust is a portrait of Robert D. Orr. It shows him from his mid-chest upwards. The sculpture is made of bronze and has a wax finish. It was created using a special method called Lost-wax casting.
Details of the Bust
Governor Orr is shown looking forward with a smile. The artist, Jon Ingle, added many small details to his face. You can see wrinkles around his eyes and mouth. He is wearing a collared shirt, a tie, and a blazer. There is a clear pin on his left lapel. This pin represents the Rotary International club.
Orr has hair that is slightly thinning, parted on the right side. The edges of the shoulders on the bust look a bit rough. They appear bumpy, which is different from the smooth, sharp edges of his tie and blazer. The artist's signature, "Jon Ingle," and the date "1987" are on the front right lapel.
The Base and Plaque
Right below the bust is its base. This base has words carved into it that say: "Robert D. Orr Governor 1981-1989". The entire bust measures about 30 inches tall, 21 inches long, and 15 inches wide. In metric units, that's about 76.2 cm tall, 53.34 cm long, and 38.1 cm wide.
A plaque is attached to the wall beneath the sculpture. This plaque shares information about the bust's dedication. It reads:
ROBERT D. ORR
Governor
State of Indiana
1981-1989
Presented by the Rotary Club of
Evansville to the State of Indiana
Jon Ingle, Sculptor
History of the Sculpture
The bronze bust was ordered by the Rotary Club of Evansville. Evansville was Governor Orr's hometown. He was an active member of the Evansville Rotary Club before he was elected governor in 1979. Jon Ingle sculpted the bust for $6,000. Ingle is also from Evansville, Indiana. He has created other bronze busts of important figures in Indiana.
How it Was Made
Governor Robert Orr and artist Jon Ingle grew up together and were friends for life. Governor Orr traveled to Evansville twice in 1987 to pose for Mr. Ingle. Before these sittings, Mr. Ingle had a professional photographer take formal pictures of the Governor's head.
Molding the sculpture took Mr. Ingle about three months. He worked on it for four to five hours every day, including weekends. Once the mold was finished, it was sent to a foundry in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A foundry is a place where metal is cast. Turning the mold into the finished bronze bust took about two months.
Presentation and Location
The bust was given to the Governor in 1988. This happened at a ceremony at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. Two copies of the bust were made. One is now in the Rotunda of the Indiana State Capitol Building. The second copy is displayed in the lobby of the Orr Academic Building at the University of Southern Indiana.
Before January 5, 1989, the bust was on display at the University of Southern Indiana. This bust replaced an earlier bust of Governor Otis Bowen. Otis Bowen was the 44th governor of Indiana. The Robert D. Orr bust is currently located at the Indiana Statehouse. You can find it on the 3rd floor rotunda, right across from the Senate Chambers.
