Bye (sports) facts for kids
A bye in sports means that a team or player doesn't have to play in a certain round of a competition. While most other participants are competing, the one with the bye gets to skip that round. This usually happens in tournaments.

What is a Bye?
A bye is like getting a free pass to the next round in a competition. It means you don't have to play in the current round. This can happen for a few reasons, especially in tournaments where teams get eliminated after losing.
Byes in Elimination Tournaments
In tournaments where teams are knocked out after one loss, like a single-elimination bracket, byes are often used when there's an odd number of teams.
- If there are 7 teams, one team might get a bye in the first round. This way, 6 teams play, and 3 winners move on. The team with the bye joins them in the next round, making 4 teams.
- Sometimes, a bye is given as a reward. For example, the best-ranked teams might get a bye in the first round. This lets them start playing later in the tournament.
Byes in Round-Robin Tournaments
In a round-robin tournament, every team plays against every other team.
- If there's an odd number of teams in a round-robin, one team usually gets a bye in each round.
- Even though a team gets a bye in some rounds, by the end of the tournament, every team will have played the same number of games.
What is a Bye Week?
In sports leagues, teams often play games on specific days, like every Sunday in American football.
- A team that doesn't play on a particular day is said to be "on bye."
- In American football, especially in the NFL, each team gets one week off during the regular season. This is called their bye week. It gives players a chance to rest and recover before the rest of the season.
