Byington Vineyard & Winery is a large farm and winemaking place located in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA in California. This area is high above Silicon Valley. The vineyard covers about 95 acres (38 hectares) of land.

The Story of Byington Vineyard

In 1958, a couple named Bill and Mary Byington bought 95 acres (38 hectares) of land. It was surrounded by tall redwood trees and was meant to be a quiet family getaway. In the early 1970s, a winemaker from the Santa Cruz Mountains suggested they grow grapes on their land.

Bill Byington, who had grown up on a farm, decided to plant grapes. He planted about 8 acres (32,000 square meters) of Pinot Noir grapes. These grapes were planted on the very southern part of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Byington Vineyard & Winery officially started in 1987 when they released their first wines.

What Kinds of Wines Are Made?

Byington Vineyard & Winery makes special wines from grapes grown in the Santa Cruz Mountains. These include types like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. They also use grapes from other famous wine regions in California. These regions include the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. This allows them to create a variety of different wines.
