The Story of Byington Vineyard
How It All Started
In 1958, a couple named Bill and Mary Byington bought 95 acres (0.38 km2) of land. This land was surrounded by tall redwood trees and was meant to be a peaceful family getaway.
Planting the First Grapes
Later, in the early 1970s, a famous winemaker from the Santa Cruz Mountains area asked the Byington family if he could use some of their land to plant grapevines. Bill Byington, who grew up on a farm, decided to plant eight acres (32,000 m2) of Pinot Noir grapes. These grapes were planted on a rugged part of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Making Wine for the First Time
The Byington Vineyard & Winery officially started making wine with its first batch in 1987. Since then, they have continued to grow grapes and produce wines from their unique mountain location.
Wines Made at Byington
Byington Vineyard & Winery is known for making special and unique wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains. They mainly produce wines from three types of grapes:
- Pinot Noir
- Chardonnay
- Cabernet Sauvignon
They also make wines using grapes from other famous wine-growing areas in California. These areas include the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. This allows them to create a variety of wines for people to enjoy.
