The Byron Howes House (also known as the Howes-Graus House) is a special old house located at 718 Vermillion Street in Hastings, Minnesota. It's known for its unique style and interesting history.

A Historic Home in Hastings

This beautiful house was built around 1868. It was designed in the Italianate style, which was a popular way to build homes back then. A famous architect named Andrew Jackson Downing helped make this style well-known across the country.

Who Was Byron Howes?

The house was built for Byron Howes, who was an important early resident of Hastings. He was a very busy person! Byron Howes helped start two banks, one in Hastings and another in St. Paul. He also worked for the local government, serving as a deputy county treasurer and holding other public jobs in Hastings.

Later Owners and Historic Status

Later, a businessman named Wendel Graus bought the house. He was involved in selling hardware and and lumber. The house became officially recognized as a historic place when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it's an important building that tells us about the past.
