Bácum is a small city in the south of Sonora, a state in Mexico. It is the main town of the Bácum Municipality. You can find it at these coordinates: 27°32′N 110°05′W / 27.533°N 110.083°W / 27.533; -110.083.

Bácum was one of eight special villages. These were started in the early 1600s by Spanish Jesuit missionaries. They were built for the Yaqui people, an Indigenous group. The Yaqui people also created their own unique way of practicing the religion.

History of Bácum: A Mission Town

The town of Bácum has a long history. It is one of eight important mission towns of the Yaqui people. Spanish Jesuit missionaries named Andrés Pérez de Ribas and Tomás Basilio founded it in 1617. They called it Santa Rosa de Bácum.

In 1930, Bácum became part of the Cajeme municipality. Then, in 1931, it became its own municipality called Bácum Municipality. In 1949, the Yaqui River flooded badly. This caused a lot of damage to farms and animals. Today, the Álvaro Obregón Dam controls the river.

Bácum Municipality is located between other areas. To the east, it borders the Cajeme Municipality. To the west, it borders the Guaymas Municipality. To the south, it touches the Gulf of California.

Area and Population of Bácum

The total area of the municipality is about 1,409.7 square kilometers (544.3 square miles). In 2005, about 21,322 people lived there. Around 3,600 of these people lived in the town of Bácum itself. The town is about 50 meters (160 feet) above sea level.

Economy: How People Make a Living in Bácum

The main way people earn money in Bácum is through farming. More than 300 square kilometers of land are watered using canals. This is called irrigation. Farmers grow many different crops. These include wheat, corn, soybeans, barley, cotton, and various garden vegetables. They also grow seasonal crops like alfalfa and some fruits.

The municipality has a coastline that is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) long. Some people also work in fishing. There are only a few small industries in Bácum. These mainly include places that pack vegetables and make liquid fertilizer.
