Cándida Martínez López, born on December 6, 1951, is a Spanish historian, university professor, and politician. She is well-known for her studies on women's history. From 2000 to 2008, she was the Minister of Education for the regional government of Andalusia. Later, from 2008 to 2011, she served as a member of the Spanish Parliament. She also helps lead a special journal called Arenal, Journal of Women's History.
About Cándida Martínez López
Cándida Martínez López earned her doctorate in Geography and History from the University of Granada in Spain. She is a professor of Ancient History at this university. She has also been a visiting professor at universities in other countries, like the Sapienza University of Rome and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
From 1990 to 1996, she made history as the first woman to be the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Granada. A "dean" is like a principal for a specific part of a university.
Studying Women's History
In her career, Cándida Martínez López has focused her research on the history of women. She has explored topics like women in ancient Mediterranean societies, women and peace, and motherhood. She also looks at how history is studied from a feminist point of view.
She was part of a group of professors who helped start Women's Studies in Spain. This led to the creation of the Seminar on Women's Studies. Later, they created the University Institute of Women's and Gender Research and Studies
, which she directed in 2000.At the University of Granada, she has taught many classes about women's and gender studies. These classes were for different levels of university students, including those studying for their history degrees and those doing advanced research. Since 2015, she has been in charge of a special program called "Women's Doctoral Studies, Discourses, and Practices of Gender."
She also helped start the Spanish Women's History Association (AEIHM). She co-founded and co-directs the journal Arenal, Journal of Women's HistoryMary Nash.

Cándida Martínez López joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1996. She became a member of the Parliament of Andalusia. In 2000, she was chosen to be the Councilor of Education for the Regional Government of Andalusia. This means she was like the Minister of Education for that region from 2004 to 2008.
During this time, she was also the president of Grenada's Parque de las Ciencias (Science Park) from 2000 to 2008.
In 2008, she led the PSOE's list for the Province of Granada in the national elections. She was elected to the Congress of Deputies, which is part of the Spanish Parliament. There, she was the main spokesperson for education for her political group. From 2008 to 2012, she was also part of the PSOE's national leadership, focusing on education and culture.
