Mary Josephine Nash Baldwin, born in 1947, is an Irish historian. She lives in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain). She is well-known for her studies on the history of women and feminism in Spain.

Her Education

Mary Nash was born in Ireland in 1947. She finished her studies at the National University of Ireland in 1967. Later, in 1975, she earned a special degree in philosophy and letters from the University of Barcelona. She continued her studies there and received her doctorate in modern history in 1977. Her main research for her doctorate was about women in political groups in Spain between 1931 and 1939.

Important Work and Awards

In 1982, Mary Nash helped start the Women's Historical Research Center at the University of Barcelona. This center helps people study the history of women.

In 1984, she won the Emilia Pardo Bazán prize for her book Presencia y protagonismo. Aspectos de la historia de las mujeres. This award recognized her important work. In 1995, she received the Creu de Sant Jordi from the government of Catalonia. This is a very important award in Catalonia. She also received the President Macià Working Medal in 2008. In 2010, the University of Granada gave her the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. This is a special honor given to people who have made great contributions.

Her Contributions to History

Mary Nash helps lead a journal called Arenal, Journal of Women's History. She has also worked with UNESCO, which is a part of the United Nations. From 1991 to 1997, she was the president of the Spanish Association for Women's History Research. She is currently a Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Barcelona.
