The C.A. Brown Cottage is a really old and special summer house in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. It was built a long time ago, in 1886-1887. This house is a great example of a building style called the Shingle Style, which was very popular for summer homes back then. A famous architect from Portland, Maine named John Calvin Stevens designed it. Because it's so important, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

What is the C.A. Brown Cottage?

The C.A. Brown Cottage is a historic building that was used as a summer home. It shows us what homes looked like in the late 1800s. It's also special because it was designed by a very well-known architect.

Where is This Historic House?

You can find the C.A. Brown Cottage on the eastern coast of Cape Elizabeth. It's located just south of the famous Portland Head Light lighthouse. From the house, you can see beautiful views of Casco Bay.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is about two and a half stories tall. It's made of wood and covered with weathered wood shingles, which look a bit gray from the weather. The bottom part of the house sits on a strong foundation made of fieldstone.

The house has a unique roof with two main gables. A higher cross gable connects these two gables. One part of the cross gable sticks out over a porch. This porch is supported by stone pillars. There used to be an open balcony area on the upper level, but it has been closed in now. At the back of the house, there's an extra section called an "ell" with a special gambrel-shaped roof.

Who Designed This Special Home?

The C.A. Brown Cottage was designed by John Calvin Stevens. He was a very important architect. He believed that buildings should fit in with their natural surroundings. He liked to use building materials that matched the area.

For example, in this house, he used fieldstone for the foundation. This stone looks like the natural rocks found in the area. He also used wood shingles, which blend in well with the landscape.

Why is it Famous?

The design of the C.A. Brown Cottage was so good that it was featured in architecture magazines in 1886 and 1890. John Calvin Stevens even included it in his own book about his work. This shows how important and well-liked his design was.
