C. N. Balakrishnan (born November 18, 1934 – died December 10, 2018) was an important Indian politician. He served as a minister in the Government of Kerala. His jobs included looking after Co-operation, Khadi and Village Industries, and Pollution Control. He was part of the Oommen Chandy Ministry. In 2011, he won the election in the Wadakkanchery area of Kerala. This made him a representative in the state's assembly.

Early Life and Community Work

C. N. Balakrishnan was born on November 18, 1934, in Puzhakkal, near Thrissur. His parents were Shri Narayanan Ezhuthachan and Smt. Paruamma. He went to school at Sree Ramakrishnasramam. From a young age, he was interested in helping people.

He started his career working with Khadi. Khadi is a special type of hand-spun cloth. It is made in villages to support local workers. Later, he married Thankamoney, a teacher. They had two daughters, C. B. Geetha and Mini Balram.

C. N. Balakrishnan was very close to a leader named K. Karunakaran. They worked together for over 50 years. C. N. Balakrishnan was also a strong leader in cooperative groups. These groups help people work together for common goals. For example, he helped form a society for fishermen. He also led the Thrissur milk supply union. He was the vice-president and then president of the district cooperative bank.

Political Journey and Achievements

C. N. Balakrishnan began his political journey as a librarian. He worked at the Puzhakkal library. He always stayed connected with local people. He worked hard to develop Khadi industries. He was the president of the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Association for 32 years. This group helps promote traditional village crafts.

In the Indian National Congress party, he served as the treasurer for many years. He also led the party in Thrissur for 15 years. People called him the "Congress manager." This was because he was good at solving problems. He could do this without upsetting anyone.

C. N. Balakrishnan first ran for election when he was 75 years old. He won the election in the Wadakkanchery area in 2011. He defeated N. R. Balan from the CPIM. He won by 6685 votes.

Two people greatly influenced C. N. Balakrishnan. They were V. R. Krishnan Ezhuthachan and K. Karunakaran. Following V. R. Krishnan Ezhuthachan, he joined the Khadi movement. He worked to strengthen the Kerala Khadi Village Industries Association. Thanks to his efforts, about 2000 women in Thrissur district still work in the Khadi sector. His association even won a National Award in 2008.

C. N. Balakrishnan also played a big role in the library movement. He worked with P. N. Panikkar. He was president of the Puzhakkal Rural Library. He also held leadership roles in district and state library groups.

He was a key figure in the cooperative movement in Thrissur. He led the Adatt farmers' cooperative bank. He also served as president of the Thrissur District Milk Supply. He was president of the Thrissur District Cooperative Bank twice. During his time, many cooperative groups that were struggling were saved. He also helped build the Jawaharlal Nehru International Convention Centre. This building is the headquarters of the Thrissur District Cooperative Bank.

C. N. Balakrishnan dedicated his life to the Indian National Congress. As president of the Thrissur District Congress Committee, he worked for 15 years. He helped make Thrissur a strong base for the party. The current DCC building was built during his time. He also helped strengthen the party across the state. The current KPCC Office, Indira Bhavan, was built when he was treasurer.

In 2011, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly. He was also appointed Minister for Cooperation.
