Cuthbert Ormond Simpkins Sr. (born January 13, 1925 – died December 4, 2019) was an important person in Louisiana. He was a dentist, a leader in the Civil Rights Movement, and a lawmaker in the state government. He had to leave Louisiana for a time because of dangers he faced, but he later returned.

Early Life and Education

Cuthbert Ormond Simpkins Sr. was born in Mansfield, Louisiana. His father was Oscar Simpkins. Cuthbert went to Wiley College and then earned a degree from Tennessee State University. He later became a dentist, getting his special degree from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee.

Serving His Country and Community

Mr. Simpkins served in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he became a founding member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The SCLC was a very important group during the Civil Rights Movement. It worked to end unfair treatment and segregation, often using peaceful protests.

He lived in Shreveport, where he worked hard for civil rights. Because of his important work, he faced serious challenges and dangers. He later moved to New York, where he lived for 26 years.

Return to Louisiana and Political Career

After many years, Cuthbert Simpkins returned to Shreveport, Louisiana. He decided to serve his community in a new way. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. He served as a state lawmaker from 1992 to 1996. In this role, he helped make laws for the state of Louisiana.

Legacy

Cuthbert Ormond Simpkins Sr. is remembered for his dedication to civil rights and his service as a dentist and politician. To honor his contributions, the post office in his hometown of Mansfield, Louisiana, was renamed after him.
