He served as the Diwan, like a chief minister, for the Cochin kingdom from 1944 to 1947. He was the very last Diwan of Cochin before it joined India.

Early Life and Education

Karunakara Menon was born in 1891 in Chittur, a town in the old Cochin kingdom. He grew up in a family of six. He went to school in Chittur. Later, he studied at Presidency College, Madras and earned his degree.

His Career in Government

After finishing college, Karunakara Menon started working. He joined the Madras Board of Revenue as a clerk. This was his first step in government service.

Working for the Government

When the first Indian government was formed in the Madras Presidency, Karunakara Menon got a new job. He became the Secretary in the Public Service Commission. This was an important role.

During World War II

When the Second World War started, Menon took on more big roles. He was made the Regional Food Commissioner for the Government of India. After that, he moved to Delhi. There, he became the Director-General of Food. This meant he was in charge of food supplies for the whole country during the war.

Diwan of Cochin

In 1944, Karunakara Menon became the Diwan of the Cochin kingdom. He took over from G. T. Boag. He served in this top position until August 15, 1947. This was the day India became independent. As Diwan, he helped guide Cochin as it joined the new Republic of India. He was the last Diwan of the kingdom.
