The C. W. Dickey House is a special home located at 3030 Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. It was one of the first houses designed by a famous architect named Charles William Dickey. He created a unique "Hawaiian style" of architecture.
Dickey built this house for himself in 1926. He lived there until 1933. Later, he built another home near Diamond Head. This house is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is a protected historical site.
What Makes This House Special?
The C. W. Dickey House is important for two main reasons. First, it was one of the first examples of Dickey's special "Hawaiian style" of building. Second, it shows the work of one of Hawaiʻi's most well-known architects.
The Famous "Dickey Roof"
One of the most famous parts of Dickey's style is the double-pitched hip roof. This roof has wide, overhanging eaves. It became so famous that people often call it a "Dickey roof."
Other cool features of his style include many windows. He also liked to add an enclosed lānai, which is like a porch or balcony. Dickey used similar ideas when he designed cottages for the Halekulani Hotel around the same time.
Looking Inside the House
This house has only one story. Its outside walls are made of board-and-batten siding. The flooring inside is made of acid-stained decorative concrete.
When you enter the house, you step into a large living room. This room is as wide as the front of the house. From the living room, you can go down one step into the dining room. The kitchen is connected to the dining room. Behind the dining room, there is a rear lanai with sliding doors.
The house has two main sections, or wings. One wing has two bedrooms with a bathroom between them. The other wing used to have a pantry, a maid's room, and a garage. The garage has since been changed into another bedroom.
