Different Meanings of "Floor"
The word "floor" has two main meanings. First, it means the flat surface you walk on. Second, it can mean a whole level or storey of a building. For example, a three-storey building has three floors.
How Floors are Numbered
The way floors are numbered can be a bit confusing! It depends on where you are in the world.
In Britain and most of Europe, the floor at ground level is called the "ground floor". The level above that is called the "first floor". The next level up is the "second floor", and so on.
However, in most of the United States, Russia, and China, the floor at ground level is called the "first floor". The level above that is then called the "second floor". This difference can sometimes confuse people visiting other countries.
Floors in Sports
Gymnasts also perform an event called "floor exercise". This takes place on a large, padded mat. Women gymnasts perform a routine with music. Men gymnasts perform a routine without music. Both show off amazing flips, twists, and balances.
