The land where the bank stands today was bought by John Keighran. This happened in the 1830s. He had to build a house there by 1836. His family owned the land for many years, until 1882.
Before it became a bank, this building might have been a bakery. Some people think it was the bakery run by Dalley and Allen.
The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney was the very first bank in Berrima. It opened its branch in 1866. The bank operated in Berrima until 1894. The Jellore Street building is the most famous place the bank used. That is why it is often called "The First Bank."
In more recent times, the building was used as an antique shop. Today, it is a private home.
What Does It Look Like?
The old CBC Bank building is a single-story stone cottage. It is built in a style called Colonial Georgian. This style was popular a long time ago. The roof is sloped, and it continues over the front porch.
The building has two stone chimneys. They are on the east and west sides. The two front windows have 12 small glass panes. They also have wooden shutters.
Some changes were made to the building over the years. An extension was added to the east side around the year 2000. A big renovation and extension happened at the back of the cottage in 2006.
Why Is This Building Important?
The First Bank building is important for several reasons. It shows how Berrima grew as a town. It was the first bank there, helping the town's businesses. Later, it was used by antique shops. Now, it is a private home.
