Cabañas is a village located on the northeast coast of western Cuba. It is part of the Mariel municipality in the Artemisa Province. Cabañas is also known as a consejo popular, which is a local community council.

History of Cabañas

Before 1970, Cabañas was its own municipality within the Pinar del Río Province. The bay of Cabañas is a natural harbor. It has been important for both industry and fishing for a long time. It also serves as a base for the Cuban Navy.

A Time of Change

In late 1958, during the Cuban Revolution, Cabañas experienced a period of unrest. There were reports of conflicts between different groups. This led to a difficult time for many people in the town. Local records mention that several individuals were affected during these events.

Geography of Cabañas

Cabañas is located in the western part of the Cabañas Bay, right by the Atlantic Ocean. It sits between two other towns: Mariel to the west (about 21 kilometers away) and Bahía Honda to the east (about 30 kilometers away).

Location and Connections

The main state highway, "Circuito Norte" (CN), runs right through the middle of Cabañas. This highway connects Cabañas to other important places. For example, it is about 26 kilometers from Guanajay, 34 kilometers from Artemisa, and 67 kilometers from the center of Havana, Cuba's capital city.
