History of Cabarete
Cabarete was founded in 1835 by a merchant named Zephaniah Kingsley. He moved there with his family and many people he had freed from his plantations. They settled in this area, which was part of his large estate. Today, many descendants of these families still live in Cabarete.

Playa Encuentro, just west of town, is one of the most popular surfing beaches in the Caribbean.
