About Cabinda

Cabinda is unique because it is separated from the rest of Angola. A thin strip of land belonging to the Democratic Republic of the Congo lies between them. To the north, Cabinda shares a border with the Republic of the Congo. To the west, it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Parts of Cabinda

The province of Cabinda is divided into four smaller areas called municipalities. These are:

  • Belize
  • Buco Zau
  • Cabinda (the capital city)
  • Landana

History and Peace

Cabinda was once known as Portuguese Congo. This was during a time when Portugal had colonies in Africa. It became part of Angola when the Alvor Agreement was signed on January 15, 1975.

Angola had a long civil war that ended in 2002. Even though the main war is over, there have been some disagreements in Cabinda. People are working towards lasting peace in the region.
