Cactus: A Small California Community
Cactus is located in the desert landscape of Imperial County. It sits about 394 feet (120 meters) above sea level. The community is found near the tracks of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) northwest of another small place called Ogilby.
A Bit of History
Cactus started out as a camp for workers building the railroad. This was a common way for small settlements to begin in the past. For a short time, Cactus even had its own post office. It was open in 1883 and then again from 1885 to 1886. This shows that people lived and worked there, even if it was just for a little while.
