Cadboro (or Cadborough) was a type of sailing ship called a schooner. It was built in Rye, England, in 1824. The famous Hudson's Bay Company bought the ship in 1826. Cadboro was used for many years, especially for the fur trade in the Pacific Northwest. The company sold her in 1860, and she was unfortunately wrecked shortly after.

The Ship Cadboro's Journey

Early Life and Purpose

The ship Cadboro first appeared in a shipping record book called Lloyd's Register in 1824. At that time, her captain was T. Rubie, and her owner was C. Hicks. She was used for coastal trade near Leith, Scotland.

In 1826, the Hudson's Bay Company bought Cadboro for £800. They planned to use her for the fur trade along the Pacific Northwest Coast. On September 25, she sailed towards the Columbia River. She traveled with another Hudson's Bay Company ship, the William and Ann. Cadboro reached the coast in May 1827. From there, she sailed north and then south to Monterrey.

Adventures on the Pacific Coast

In 1828, Cadboro was involved in an event with the S'Klallam tribe. Under the command of Alexander McCleod, the ship fired its cannons near a village close to Port Townsend.

Years later, in 1842, James Douglas traveled overland to Fort Nisqually. Douglas later became the Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Cadboro sailed north to explore a good spot for a new fort. This place soon became Fort Victoria.

Cadboro was the very first ship to drop anchor in Cadboro Bay, British Columbia. Because of this, the bay and the nearby community were named after the ship.

In 1846, Cadboro helped transport people who survived a shipwreck. These were the crew members of the schooner USS Shark. Cadboro took them to California. She left in January and returned on February 17, 1847.

In 1850, Cadboro faced some trouble with the United States. She was accused of carrying ten people who had left the U.S. military without permission. A few days later, U.S. authorities seized Cadboro at Nisqually. This happened because the Hudson's Bay Company had not paid taxes on some goods.

The Final Voyage

Cadboro was sold in 1860 to a Captain Howard. She had been sitting in the harbor since 1857. Sadly, she was lost later that same year (or possibly in October 1862). This happened while she was on a trip carrying lumber from Puget Sound. The captain managed to get the ship to the shore, but the strong waves completely destroyed it.
