Cade (born 1734, died 1756) was a very important racehorse from Great Britain. He was a "foundation sire" for Thoroughbred horses. This means many famous racehorses today can trace their family tree back to him! Cade was also the best male breeding horse in Great Britain and Ireland for several years. He earned the title of Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1752, 1753, 1758, 1759, and 1760.

Cade's Early Life and Family

Cade was born in 1734 in Great Britain. His breeder was Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin. Cade's father was the famous Godolphin Arabian, another key horse in the history of Thoroughbreds.

Cade's mother was a horse named Roxana. Sadly, Roxana died when Cade was only 10 days old. Because he was so young, he had to be raised by drinking milk from cows.

Cade's Racing Adventures

Cade was a racehorse, and he competed in several important races.

Winning the King's Plate

In 1740, Cade won a big race called the King's Plate. He beat other strong horses like Sedbury, Elephant, and Blacksilver. This was a major victory for him.

More Races and a New Owner

The next year, in April 1741, Cade raced in the King's Plate again. He finished second to Sedbury this time. He still managed to beat Countess and Elephant.

In July 1744, Cade came in second in another race. He was then sold in 1745 to a new owner, Thomas Meredith of Easby. For his new owner, Cade ran in a 50 guineas race and finished third.

Cade's Success as a Breeding Horse

While Cade was a good racehorse, he became even more famous as a "stallion." A stallion is a male horse used for breeding. Cade was known for passing on his good qualities to his offspring.

Leading Sire in England

Cade was named the Leading Sire in England five times. This means his children were winning many races! He held this title in 1752, 1753, 1758, 1759, and 1760.

Cade's Famous Offspring

Many of Cade's children became important horses themselves. Here are a few:

  • Cade Mare: This grey filly was born in 1751. She became the mother of a horse named Mambrino (horse). Her family line also leads to the famous racehorse Alysheba.
  • Changeling: Born in 1747, this bay colt was a full-brother to Matchem. He also had successful children.
  • Kitty Fisher: This grey filly was born in 1756. She was sent to the USA and is in the family tree of the famous American horse Boston.
  • Matchem: He was one of Cade's most famous sons. Matchem became a leading sire himself three times. He is one of only three main family lines that lead to almost all modern Thoroughbreds today.
  • Silvio: This bay colt was born in 1754. He won the Richmond Gold Cup in 1764.
  • Wildair: Born in 1753, this bay colt was sent to the USA. Later, he was brought back to England.
  • Young Cade: This bay colt, born in 1747, didn't race. However, he became an important breeding horse, just like his father.

Cade passed away in September 1756 at Easby Abbey.
